Apparel Manufacturing for Chicago Brands
Chicago sits at the center of the American Midwest, a city built on rail, commerce, and an independent streak that still runs through its fashion scene. From streetwear startups in the South Loop to sustainable labels in Wicker Park, local founders need a production partner who can keep pace with big-box ambitions while still handling early-stage minimums.
Why brands in Chicago choose to source through Ohzehn
Chicago has long served as a proving ground for direct-to-consumer brands. The city houses 179 fashion tech startups, including names like Trunk Club, Brideside, The Tie Bar, Threadless, and Petite Plume Luxury Sleepwear. Out of these, 38 startups are funded, with 10 having secured Series A or higher funding. Over the past 10 years, an average of 8 new fashion tech companies have launched in Chicago annually, with several founded by alumni of Kellogg School of Management, University of Chicago, and MIT.
These brands are building nimble operations that cannot afford to spend months sourcing factories, negotiating minimums, and chasing down sample updates. They need a single point of contact who understands both the design language of American consumers and the technical realities of Chinese manufacturing floors.
Ohzehn Textiles fills this gap. Based in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, the performance-apparel heartland of China, the factory is vertically integrated from fabric development through cut, sew, and finishing. Co-founder JJ Chen, through his family's prior factory operations before Ohzehn launched, produced for Walmart, Target, Calvin Klein, Victoria's Secret, GAP, Hanes Brands, SKIMS, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Fruit of the Loom, Lane Bryant, La Senza, Cacique, Soma, and Third Love. That depth of production experience translates directly into smoother tech-pack reviews, faster sampling cycles, and fewer quality surprises at scale.
The Chicago-to-China lane: ports and transit times
Chicago is not a coastal city, yet it functions as one of the largest inland cargo hubs in the country. Chicago is North America's intermodal nerve-centre: its rail ramps lifted approximately 17 million TEU equivalents in 2021, far more than any coastal port. For urgent freight, O'Hare International Airport moved approximately 2.07 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, making it the third-busiest cargo airport in the world.
Most importers use FCL intermodal: containers discharge at Los Angeles/Long Beach, New York, Savannah, or Prince Rupert, then move by stack-train to Chicago in sealed condition, without devanning en route. Union Pacific's high-priority Z-train service between the Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal and Global 2 in Chicago offers a transit time of just over three days. BNSF's fastest Z-train schedules from San Bernardino, California, to Chicago run in 49 hours.
For a typical ocean shipment from Fuzhou or the Guangzhou-Dongguan corridor, expect these timelines:
- Port-to-port (China to LA/Long Beach): 13 to 18 days sailing time for direct services.
- Rail from West Coast to Chicago: 2 to 4 days.
- Total door-to-door (ocean + rail + local drayage): Around 30 to 40 days for a door-to-door shipment from China to the USA via sea freight.
- Air freight (door-to-door): 5 to 10 days including export pickup, consolidation, flight, US customs clearance, and inland delivery.
- Express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS): 2 to 8 days to ship goods to Chicago from China, depending on service level.
Major inland hubs serving Chicago include BNSF Logistics Park Chicago, UP Global IV in Joliet, CSX Bedford Park, and CN Gateway in Markham. For samples or urgent re-orders, air freight through O'Hare keeps lead times tight.
What we make for Chicago brands
Chicago's apparel founders span categories. The city has been an epicenter of fashion and culture for years, with streetwear becoming a staple of its fashion culture, and numerous streetwear brands and stores scattered throughout Chicago. Many apparel brands based in Chicago are making consistent efforts to offer affordable and eco-friendly options.
Our production lines align with what local founders are building:
Activewear
Fuzhou has been the center of China's performance-fabric production for decades. We produce moisture-wicking leggings, compression tops, running shorts, and technical outerwear. Four-way stretch, flatlock seaming, bonded hems, reflective trims.
Intimates
Bras, underwear, shapewear, and lounge sets. JJ Chen's family history in intimates production includes work for major mall brands and DTC disruptors alike. We handle wire-free construction, molded cups, and size-inclusive grading.
Casual
Everyday tees, hoodies, joggers, and basics. Chicago brands like Threadless have built global communities around user-submitted designs on shirts, hoodies, blankets, and other textiles. We produce garment-dyed, enzyme-washed, and brushed-back fleece blanks ready for print or embroidery finishing.
Yoga
High-waisted leggings, bralettes, cover-ups. Soft-hand fabrics with excellent recovery. We offer custom dyeing, sublimation, and screen printing on lycra-blend bases.
Swimwear
Bikinis, one-pieces, rash guards, board shorts. Chlorine-resistant and UV-protective fabrics. We handle fully lined construction, removable cups, and adjustable straps.
Sustainable and Bio-Based
Chicago-based brands like Cobalt Street champion slow fashion with sustainable and minimalist designs, all styles ethically made in Chicago with premium and eco-conscious textiles. For founders seeking similar values at scale, we offer OEKO-TEX 100 certified fabrics, GRS recycled polyester, and up to 99.5% plastic-free fabric options. Certifications include ZDHC, SAC, and BSCI compliance.
Compliance and tariffs for United States brands
The US-China tariff landscape has shifted considerably. Additional duties on China now range from 30% to 50%. There is a baseline 10% tariff on all apparel imports, a 20% fentanyl-related duty, and 0% to 20% Section 301 duties from earlier trade actions. When you add up the additional tariffs, total duties on certain Chinese apparel can range between 30% and 70%.
The Section 122 tariff is set to expire after 150 days, on July 24, 2026, unless Congress votes to extend it. IEEPA tariffs are no longer in effect as of February 24, 2026, after the US Supreme Court ruled them illegal.
Despite tariff increases, China is often still the cheapest, highest-quality option for many small and mid-sized brands. Moving production to countries outside of China may seem like the move, but it isn't always viable for small apparel brands due to minimum order quantities and fabric constraints.
Our in-house lab is PVH-accredited, meaning our testing protocols meet the standards of one of the largest apparel conglomerates in the world. We provide full documentation for US Customs and Border Protection clearance: commercial invoices, packing lists, country-of-origin certificates, and fabric composition breakdowns.
How time zones actually work
Chicago operates on Central Time (UTC-6, or UTC-5 during daylight saving). Fuzhou runs on China Standard Time (UTC+8), placing it 14 hours ahead of Chicago in winter and 13 hours ahead in summer. When your Chicago office opens at 9 AM, it is already 11 PM in Fuzhou.
This gap can slow communication if you are working with factories that keep strict local hours. Our US-raised bilingual lead, Kelvin Liu, lives in China and works flexibly across all time zones. He answers emails and takes calls during Chicago business hours, bridging the overnight gap so you are never waiting 24 hours for a response on an urgent sample approval or shipping question.
We commit to 72-hour quote turnarounds. Send a tech pack, and you will have a landed-cost estimate within three business days.
Categories of brands in Chicago we are a fit for
Pre-revenue founders: You have a design vision and maybe a small Kickstarter or friends-and-family round. You need low minimums and patient guidance on spec development. We start conversations at this stage.
DTC brands doing $500K to $5M: You have proven product-market fit and need to professionalize your supply chain. Consistent quality, reliable lead times, and scalable capacity become critical. Our vertically integrated setup means you are not chasing three different vendors for fabric, cut-sew, and finishing.
Established retailers and wholesale brands: Chicago houses major retailers like Ulta Beauty, the largest beauty retailer in the United States, which since opening its first store in 1990 has grown to become the top national retailer in its category. Brands at this scale need a production partner who can handle larger order volumes, tighter compliance requirements, and multiple SKU drops per season.
Streetwear labels: Jugrnaut is a premier home-grown streetwear apparel boutique/brand from Chicago. The co-owners combined efforts to establish themselves in the city's South Loop neighborhood as one of the go-to spots for fashion and culture, opening its doors in late 2007. Joe Freshgoods is a Chicago-based streetwear brand known for its bold and creative designs, gaining popularity through collaborations with Nike and New Balance. Streetwear drops demand quick turns, limited runs, and bold fabric choices. We handle cut-and-sew for oversized silhouettes, heavyweight fleece, and custom embroidery.
Sustainable-focused labels: Chicago brands like Mata Traders are design-driven, sustainable, and Fair Trade, offering affordable, colorful, and original apparel made by artisans. Dearborn Denim produces Chicago-made, ethically produced jeans and apparel, tailored in-house at affordable prices. Family-owned since 2016, they offer custom hemming and a variety of fits. If your brand story centers on responsible sourcing, our GRS, OEKO-TEX 100, and BSCI certifications back up the claims on your hangtags.
The case for going direct
Middlemen add margin and subtract visibility. When you work through a sourcing agent or trading company, you lose direct contact with the people cutting your fabric and sewing your seams. Problems get filtered. Details get lost in translation.
Going direct to a vertically integrated manufacturer like Ohzehn changes the dynamic. You speak directly with the production team. You receive photos and videos from the floor. You know exactly where your fabric is milled, where your garments are sewn, and who is responsible for quality control at each stage.
This visibility matters when you are building a brand that customers trust. Chicago's Trunk Club has become a pillar of the Chicago tech community since its launch in 2009, with hundreds of employees in the heart of River North. That kind of growth depends on supply chain partners who can scale without compromising on fit, fabric hand, or delivery windows.
Chicago built its reputation on making things move. For apparel founders in this city, the next step is finding a production partner who moves with the same purpose.
