Regenerated cellulose fibers like Tencel lyocell, modal, and cupro start as plant pulp and are chemically reformed into thread, so they are plant-based and shed no microplastics, but they are processed rather than raw. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and elastane are the opposite: plastics extruded into filament, which is why they shed microplastic fibers every wash.
The single source of truth is the fiber-content label sewn into the seam, which is legally required in most markets to state the fiber percentages. Marketing words are not regulated. The word on the tag is.
Which fabrics are plastic-free?
Here is the honest verdict by fiber family. The comparison is qualitative on purpose, because published microplastic-shedding numbers vary too much between studies to quote as fact.

Which fabrics are not plastic-free, even when the marketing implies otherwise?
These are the fibers that most often slip past a well-meaning shopper because a green label sits next to them.
Recycled polyester and recycled nylon. Recycled plastic is still plastic. Turning bottles into thread reduces virgin-oil use, which is a genuine win on that one axis, but the fiber is the same PET or polyamide polymer and sheds the same microplastics. Elastane and spandex. The stretch in most modern clothing is a small percentage of elastane, a polyurethane plastic. A garment can read as mostly cotton and still carry plastic in every stretchy seam.
Vegan leather. Most vegan leather is polyurethane or PVC, which is plastic on a fabric backing. Plant leathers exist, but many are still finished with a plastic coating.

How do you verify a plastic-free clothing claim?
You verify it the same way a factory does, by reading the content label and asking three questions. First, do natural or cellulosic fibers make up the entire content, with any synthetic percentage at zero? Second, is the stretch coming from a plant-derived source rather than elastane, and is the sewing thread and trim accounted for, not just the main panel? Third, is there a certification on the tag that a lab stands behind?
Marketing language like green, eco, responsible, and conscious means nothing on its own. A fiber percentage and a certification number mean everything. If a brand cannot show you the content breakdown, treat the plastic-free claim as unproven.
Why is plastic-free activewear so hard?

The certifications that actually mean something
If you remember three acronyms out of all this, remember these. They are the ones that are hard to fake and hard to trade around.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) covers organic fiber content plus the finishing chemistry across the supply chain. On a cotton piece it means the cotton was organically grown and the processing was restricted.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished garment for a broad list of harmful substances at the parts-per-million level. It is a chemistry safety floor, strongest when it is line-wide rather than on select styles.
bluesign restricts inputs at the mill level, the closest thing the industry has to a full input-to-output chemistry audit.
One honest caveat: the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certifies recycled content, which is a good thing, but recycled polyester is still plastic. GRS is a recycling claim, not a plastic-free claim. Do not read one as the other.
