The Fuzhou manufacturing cluster: where performance knit actually gets made

Fuzhou, in Fujian Province, is the performance-apparel knitwear heartland of China. Ohzehn Textiles operates four factories here. This page covers why Fujian dominates activewear and intimates manufacturing, the port and freight lanes out of Fuzhou, and what a brand actually gets by sourcing from a Fujian mill rather than a Guangdong one.

Most Western sourcing conversations start and end with Guangzhou, because Guangzhou is where the trade shows are and where the trading companies answer the phone in English. That default costs brands real money in activewear, because the knit capability is somewhere else.

Fujian's position in Chinese apparel

Chinese apparel manufacturing is not one industry. It is a set of regional clusters that each specialized decades ago, then compounded that specialization through supplier density, trained labor, and machinery investment.

Fujian's coastal corridor runs roughly Fuzhou in the north, through Quanzhou and Jinjiang in the middle, down to Xiamen in the south. Jinjiang and Quanzhou became China's domestic sportswear cluster, and the brands that came out of it are the ones you see on Chinese retail streets: Anta, Xtep, 361 Degrees, and Peak all trace to that corridor. That domestic sportswear demand pulled an entire upstream supply chain into the region. Performance yarn suppliers, circular and warp knitting capacity, dyehouses tuned for synthetic and blended knit, elastic and trim makers, and the labor pool that knows how to run all of it.

Fuzhou sits at the north end of that corridor and concentrates knit and intimates capability specifically, including the vertically integrated mills that take yarn all the way through finished garment on one site. Guangdong, by contrast, built its density around the Guangzhou and Dongguan corridor and skews toward woven, outerwear, denim, and fast fashion, with a very deep bench of trading companies layered on top.

We are deliberately not publishing province-level market-share percentages. The commonly circulated figures come from sources that define the categories differently and update at different intervals, and a number you cannot verify is worse than no number. What is uncontested is the specialization pattern, and the Jinjiang sportswear brands are the public evidence of it.

Why we are here

Ohzehn Textiles operates four factories in Fuzhou. The reason the operation is in Fujian rather than Guangdong is the same reason the cluster exists: the vertical chain is available here in a way it is not elsewhere.

That chain runs yarn through a co-located partner spinning mill, then knitting, dyeing and finishing, printing, pattern and sampling, cut-and-sew, and in-house PVH-accredited lab testing. Eight steps, one hub, one team. The full step-by-step breakdown of what that means for a brand's lead time and cost is at the in-house yarn and knitting factory page.

The practical consequence: the person who quotes your MOQ runs the knitting hall. No broker translates your tech pack into a second tech pack. Our certification stack and five ways to verify it yourself are at Ohzehn Textiles reviews and verification.

Ports and freight out of Fuzhou

Two ports matter. Fuzhou Port serves the city directly. Xiamen Port sits south along the same Fujian coast and carries more deep-sea container services, which usually means more sailing options on any given week. We book ocean freight out of whichever gives your PO the better sailing for its ship window.

LaneRouteNotes
US West CoastTranspacific direct to Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle or TacomaShortest ocean lane from Fujian. Fastest option for a US program before drayage inland.
US East CoastVia the Panama Canal to New York, Savannah, Charleston, NorfolkLonger ocean time than the West Coast lane, often simpler if your 3PL is east of the Mississippi.
European Union and UKAsia to Europe via the Suez routing, into Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, FelixstoweThe longest of the three standard lanes. Routing has been subject to disruption and carrier rerouting, so confirm the service string at booking.
AirFuzhou Changle International or Xiamen Gaoqi InternationalFor samples, for a launch date you cannot miss, and for the tail end of a program. Costs multiples of ocean per unit.

We do not publish fixed transit-day figures. As of 2026, ocean transit times move with carrier, service string, blank sailings, canal routing, and port congestion, and a number that was accurate last quarter can be wrong this quarter. Verify at booking. Kelvin quotes the actual sailing and the actual transit alongside the rate, and the freight line then feeds straight into the landed-cost calculator with your real duty rate and HTS classification.

Fujian vs Guangdong for activewear, honestly

We are in Fujian, so treat this section with appropriate skepticism and check it against anyone else you are talking to. Here is the fair version.

FactorGuangdong (Guangzhou, Dongguan)Fujian (Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Jinjiang, Xiamen)
Total capacityLarger. More factories, more of everything.Smaller in absolute terms.
Category strengthWoven, outerwear, denim, fast fashion, broad general apparel.Performance knit, seamless, intimates, technical stretch.
Small test runsBetter. Deep bench of small workshops that will run a few hundred units.Weaker. Vertical mills are built around volume, not micro-runs.
Trading companiesVery many. Easy to reach, easy to mistake for factories.Fewer. More likely you are talking to an actual mill.
Vertical integrationPresent but less common in knit. Fabric is usually sourced separately.Higher concentration of yarn-to-garment knit mills on one site.
English-language salesStronger, because the trading layer is built for export.Thinner outside the larger exporters.
Travel accessEasier from Hong Kong.Requires a domestic connection or a direct flight into Fuzhou or Xiamen.

The honest read: if your product is woven, if you need a 300-unit test, or if you want to walk twenty suppliers in three days, Guangdong is the better geography. If your product is leggings, sports bras, seamless, or intimates, and you are past the test phase and buying at volume, Fujian is where the capability lives. Our capacity in the Guangzhou and Dongguan corridor exists precisely because both answers are sometimes right. Getting there

Fuzhou Changle International

The nearest international airport to the factories. Xiamen Gaoqi International is the alternative, further south along the coast, with an overland connection up. Many US brands route through Hong Kong or Taipei. If you are already sourcing across Asia, the Hong Kong and Seoul city guides cover the surrounding brand and trade context.

The two-day visit

What you actually see

Day one: knitting halls, dyeing and finishing, and the in-house lab, including a live test run on whichever method matters to your program. Day two: pattern room, cut-and-sew lines, QC stations, and a working session on your specific tech pack with the people who will run it. You leave with a quote in motion.

If you are not ready to fly, we run the same walk live on WeChat video, scheduled inside 48 hours of your request, on a day and time you choose. Most brands do the video walk first and travel later, once a program is worth the flight. City-side sourcing guides for brands in other markets are indexed at the cities hub.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Fujian the activewear cluster?

Because the region's industrial base built around knitwear and footwear rather than woven, and the domestic sportswear brands that emerged from the Jinjiang and Quanzhou corridor pulled performance yarn, circular knitting, synthetic-capable dyeing, and elastic trim supply into the same geography. Fuzhou concentrates the knit and intimates end of that corridor.

Fuzhou or Guangzhou for sourcing?

Guangzhou for woven, denim, outerwear, small test runs, and breadth. Fuzhou and the wider Fujian corridor for performance knit, seamless, intimates, and vertically integrated production at volume. Both answers are legitimate and the right one depends on your category and your stage.

How do I visit?

Fly into Fuzhou Changle International, or into Xiamen Gaoqi International and connect overland. Email Kelvin and he will coordinate the schedule. Two days is enough to see the full chain and work through your tech pack with the people who will build it.

What ports serve Fuzhou?

Fuzhou Port directly, and Xiamen Port south along the Fujian coast with more deep-sea container services. Air moves through Fuzhou Changle International or Xiamen Gaoqi International. Transit times vary by carrier and season, so we quote them at booking rather than publishing a fixed figure.
