An activewear factory with in-house yarn knitting owns the sequential steps between yarn and finished garment. At Ohzehn Textiles, that means yarn spinning through a co-located partner mill, then knitting, dyeing and finishing, printing, pattern and sampling, cut-and-sew, in-house PVH-accredited lab testing, and freight, all operated across four factories in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China. Fabric MOQ is 5,000 yards, production lead time is roughly 60 days, and quote turnaround is 72 hours. Vertical integration is the reason the numbers hold when a bulk run scales.

Most apparel mills describe themselves as vertically integrated. Almost none actually are. A mill that owns cut-and-sew but subcontracts knitting is not vertically integrated on fabric quality. A mill that owns knitting and dyeing but ships every sample to a third-party lab is not vertically integrated on quality control. A mill that owns everything except printing is not vertically integrated on lead time when a print-heavy program hits the calendar. The word gets used loosely because it sells. Here is what real vertical integration looks like at an activewear factory, step by step, with the honest note on what stays out.

The 8-step chain, in order

Step 1

Yarn spinning

Yarn is spun through a co-located partner mill. This is the one step where we do not own the machines outright. The relationship is exclusive on bio-based nylon feedstocks for the OHZEHN-TEX platform, which means we control the specific inputs, staple length, ply, and twist for those yarns. On standard performance nylons, polyester, and cotton blends, we have preferred capacity and lock in yarn specs at the machine level.

Why this matters: activewear performance starts at the fiber. The wrong denier, the wrong twist, or the wrong finish on the yarn will kill a fabric build regardless of how well the knit is engineered. Owning the yarn spec means we can iterate at the fiber level, not just the fabric level.

Step 2

Knitting

Circular knit for jersey, interlock, rib, mesh, and technical performance builds. Warp knit for tricot, powernet, and stable-stretch performance fabrics like the shells used in high-support bras. Machines include Mayer & Cie and Terrot circular, Karl Mayer warp. Gauge runs 20 through 32 for activewear, up to 40 for fine seamless.

In-house knitting is the single largest reason our fabric quality holds across dye lots. Gauge, stitch density, ply insertion, and tension are calibrated at the machine and recorded per run. Every fabric build has a machine setting record. When we scale a program from a 5,000-yard sample lot to a 50,000-yard bulk run, we knit to the same machine settings.

Step 3

Dyeing and finishing

Piece dyeing for solids, yarn dyeing for stripes and jacquards, print-then-set for sublimated activewear. Finishing includes moisture-management, anti-microbial, PFAS-free water-repellent, and hand-feel modifications. The dyehouse holds ZDHC certification for chemistry inputs and wastewater discharge, with a full MRSL compliance record.

Owning the dyehouse is what enables PFAS-free protocols end-to-end. When dyeing is subcontracted, the mill has to trust the dyehouse's chemistry inputs. When the dyehouse is in-house, we control the input chemistry and can run PFAS-free finish protocols across the entire fabric family without exception.

Step 4

Printing

Sublimation for polyester and nylon activewear where the print becomes part of the fiber. Digital direct for placement prints and short runs. Traditional screen for solid-color repeat prints and technical placements. Screen print inks are OEKO-TEX certified.

Print is often subcontracted at other mills because it requires distinct machinery and specialist operators. In-house print means color matching runs on our machines with our operators, and turnaround for a lab dip is measured in days rather than weeks.

Step 5

Pattern and sampling

Sampling room sits next to bulk production on the same site, not across town at a third party. Pattern makers, sample sewers, and fit technicians work from the same tech pack the bulk line will work from. A fit review can happen in the morning and a corrected sample can be cut the same afternoon.

When sampling is subcontracted, every fit iteration adds a shipping round and a coordination lag. Two-round sampling that should take 6 weeks stretches to 10. Three-round sampling that should take 8 weeks stretches to 14.

Step 6

Cut and sew

Automated cutters for fabric utilization and manual cutting for small-run and custom shapes. Sewing lines carry flatlock, coverstitch, overlock, bar-tack, elastic insertion, and bonded seam capacity. Step 7

In-house lab testing

PVH-accredited, one of ~10 mills globally with Target Corporation lab certification. Test set covers PFAS at ppm levels aligned to California's 2027 threshold, colorfastness (wash and crocking), dimensional stability (shrinkage), stretch and recovery, UV protection factor, and full chemistry compliance against MRSL.

Owning the lab is what enables first-party testing for retail-buyer programs. It compresses the sampling cycle by 2 to 4 weeks per round because samples do not ship to a third-party lab. Step 8

Freight and customs

Ocean freight booked out of Xiamen or Fuzhou, air freight through Fuzhou Changle International. US customs handled by our brokerage relationships, HTS classifications validated per program, Section 301 duty calculated at classification. Delivered to your 3PL door as one landed-cost number.

This step is what makes the vertical integration count for the brand. Owning the factory is worth less if the finished goods sit at a port because of a customs error. Why this matters for spec accuracy

Spec accuracy is the number one reason bulk production comes back different from sample. When yarn, knitting, and dyeing sit under different roofs, the spec that the sample was built to lives in a tech pack shared across three vendors. Every vendor interprets. Every interpretation drifts by a few percent. By the time all three vendors have handed off, the bulk fabric measures 3 to 8 percent off the sample on gauge, weight, or stretch. When yarn spec, knit machine settings, and dye recipe all live on our site under our engineering team, drift shrinks. Bulk and sample come back within test tolerance because the same operators ran both.

Why this matters for dye lot consistency

Dye lot consistency starts at greige, before dyeing. A greige fabric that varies in gauge across lots dyes to different depths even with identical dye recipes. In-house knitting stabilizes the greige. The dyehouse then runs shorter dye cycles because the input is predictable. Two lots pulled 6 months apart come back within Delta-E 1.0 rather than Delta-E 3.0. That is the difference between a repeat program a buyer trusts and one they do not.

Why this matters for lead time

Every handoff between vendors adds 3 to 10 days for coordination, shipping between sites, and re-inspection on receipt. A subcontracted supply chain with 4 handoffs adds 12 to 40 days on top of the actual production time. A vertically-integrated chain removes most of them. Real numbers: sample cycles compress from 8 to 10 weeks down to 4 to 6, bulk production stays on the 60-day plan because the mill controls its own bottleneck, and rush programs can be pulled forward because scheduling happens across a single ops team rather than four vendor calendars.
