Non-plastic fabric: which fabrics are not plastic

A non-plastic fabric is one whose fibers are grown or raised rather than refined from petroleum. Cotton, linen, hemp, wool, and silk are non-plastic by nature. Are natural fabrics always plastic-free?

The fiber is, but the finished garment often is not. This is where good intentions leak. A cotton tee can carry elastane for stretch. A wool sock is routinely blended with nylon so it survives the wash. A linen blazer can be sewn with polyester thread and finished with a plastic-based wrinkle repellent. Plastic also hides in stretch waistbands, elastic, coated zippers, sequins, and printed graphics. So a fabric being labeled cotton or wool is a good start, not a guarantee. Which fabrics are actually plastic?

What about recycled, vegan, or eco fabrics?

None of those words means non-plastic. Vegan leather is usually polyurethane or PVC, both plastic. Eco and sustainable are marketing words with no fixed definition. A fabric earns the non-plastic label from its fiber content, not from the adjectives on the swing tag. When the marketing and the content label disagree, believe the content label.

How do I check whether a fabric is non-plastic?

Read the sewn-in fiber-content label, the small one at the side seam or neck, which is legally required to list every fiber by percentage. If it reads 100 percent cotton, linen, hemp, wool, silk, lyocell, or modal, the fabric is non-plastic. If it lists polyester, nylon, acrylic, polypropylene, or elastane at any percentage, that share of the garment is plastic. A shirt that is 95 percent cotton and 5 percent elastane is 5 percent plastic and will shed accordingly. Can activewear be made from non-plastic fabric?

This is the hardest case, and the honest answer is mostly not, at least not yet on the mainstream rack.
