Where is spandex hiding in my closet?

Spandex almost never gets named on the front of a garment, so you find it by reading the fiber-content label and looking for spandex, elastane, or Lycra at any percentage. It shows up heavily in leggings, yoga pants, sports bras, cycling and compression wear, and swimwear, where it can run from 10 to 25 percent. It hides at low percentages in "stretch" denim and chinos, fitted button-downs and tees, underwear and bras, socks and tights, and athleisure of every kind. A useful rule: if a garment stretches noticeably and recovers its shape, it almost certainly contains spandex, even if the front just says cotton. That last few percent is what makes an otherwise natural-fiber piece impossible to compost or recycle cleanly.

Is recycled or bio-based spandex plastic-free?

No. Recycled spandex and the newer partly plant-based stretch fibers are still segmented polyurethane, and polyurethane is still plastic. Reusing waste or swapping in some bio-derived feedstock can lower the virgin-oil footprint on that one axis, which is a real improvement, but the finished fiber behaves the same in the wash and at end of life.
