Microplastic-free clothing: how to actually find it

Microplastic-free clothing is clothing made from fibers that are not plastic, so there is no plastic to shed in the first place. That means natural fibers like cotton, linen, hemp, wool, and silk, plus regenerated-cellulose fibers like Tencel lyocell and modal. Any synthetic, polyester, nylon, acrylic, or spandex, sheds microplastics, and recycled synthetics still shed. Read the fiber-content label, not the marketing.

Can natural fabrics still shed microplastics?

A pure natural fiber will not shed microplastics, but the garment it is sewn into can, and this is where most "I thought this was natural" mistakes happen. Three things reintroduce plastic even into a mostly-natural piece. First, blends: a cotton tee with 5 percent elastane, wool socks reinforced with nylon, or a linen shirt with a polyester core thread all contain shedding plastic. Second, finishes: a plastic-based water-repellent, wrinkle-free, or anti-odor treatment coats natural fabric in synthetic chemistry, and historically many of these were PFAS. Third, hardware and decoration: printed panels, plastic sequins, coated waistbands, and elastic all add plastic. Does recycled polyester count as microplastic-free?

No, and this is the single most common trap. Recycled polyester is still PET, the same plastic as the bottle it came from, and it sheds microfibers in the wash exactly like virgin polyester. If anything, the recycling process shortens and weakens the fibers, so recycled polyester can shed as much or more. Recycling a bottle into a jacket keeps that bottle out of landfill, which is a genuine supply-chain benefit worth having, but it does nothing about the plastic that rinses out of the fabric every wash. Is microplastic-free activewear possible?

It is possible for lower-intensity pieces and genuinely hard for high-performance stretch, which is worth being honest about. Everyday and lower-sweat activewear can be built from merino wool, organic cotton, or Tencel and be fully microplastic-free, which is why merino base layers and natural-fiber loungewear work well. The problem is the leggings-and-swim category, because the stretch and recovery that make those garments perform come almost entirely from spandex, and spandex is plastic. There is no perfect natural drop-in for high-performance four-way stretch at scale yet. Wash bags and machine filters can capture some of the shedding, but capturing fibers after the fact does not make a plastic garment microplastic-free. Does washing clothes in a bag make them microplastic-free?

A wash bag like the ones designed to trap fibers, or an in-line washing-machine filter, catches a share of what a synthetic garment sheds in the laundry, and washing cold, less often, and on a gentle cycle reduces shedding too.
