Why does finishing chemistry matter for a basic tee?

A heavyweight cotton tee starts life as yarn. It gets knit, cut, sewn, and then finished. That finishing step is where hand feel, shrinkage control, color fastness, and wrinkle resistance get dialed in. And it is also where PFAS, silicones, cross-linkers, and optical brighteners quietly enter the garment.
Most founders obsess over GSM, yarn count, and silhouette. Few audit the finishing recipe. The result: beautifully constructed basics that carry hidden chemistry the care label never discloses.

Because many of these compounds accumulate in the body, PFAS-coated clothing may increase health risks over time through the exposures that come with each wearing.
What are PFAS, and why are they in casual apparel?
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a family of over 10,000 synthetic chemicals characterized by extremely strong carbon-fluorine bonds. These bonds make them highly resistant to heat, water, oil, and stains.
In textiles, PFAS are used as surface treatments to block water and stains. You might expect them in rain jackets or hiking pants, but they also appear in casual basics marketed as wrinkle-free, stain-resistant, or simply "easy care."
Toxic-Free Future's research revealed widespread use of PFAS in apparel and home textiles, finding that 72% of tested items marketed as stain- or water-resistant contained PFAS.
The problem: PFAS do not break down. They persist in landfills, waterways, and human tissue. And when applied to a garment you wear against your skin, they become part of your daily chemical load.
Where do PFAS hide in the premium basics supply chain?
PFAS rarely enter through the base fiber. Cotton, linen, and even conventional nylon are not inherently fluorinated. The contamination comes downstream.
Dye house finishing
Even more concerning is the indirect use of PFAS in textile production. Some dyes and finishing processes unintentionally introduce these chemicals into supposedly PFAS-free products.
Reactive dyes often use polyamide, a material known to contain PFAS, to protect fabrics during the dyeing process. Finishing treatments like flame retardants, water repellents, and stain-resistant coatings frequently involve PFAS.
Softeners and hand-builders
After garment dyeing, mills often apply softeners to restore hand feel lost during wet processing. PFAS alternatives are available as water-borne products and can be applied on standard finishing equipment like stenter frames or by exhaustion in dye jet machines. The vast majority of these products is cationic.
But many legacy softeners still contain fluorinated polymers. If your dye house has not explicitly reformulated, assume the default chemistry includes compounds you would not want near skin.
Wrinkle-free and easy-care treatments
These finishes typically involve cross-linkers that bond to cellulose fibers. Typical added crosslinkers are blocked isocyanates and there are already available products with bio-based blocking group. Some cross-linkers are fluorine-free. Others are not. The spec sheet rarely clarifies.
What does EU REACH Entry 79 mean for your basics line?
The new Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation restrictions on the use of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) and PFHxA-related substances will apply from 10 October 2026.
EU REACH Annex XVII Entry 79 restricts PFHxA in textiles to 25 ppb starting October 10, 2026. ECHA's universal PFAS restriction proposal would extend parts-per-billion limits to roughly 10,000 compounds across consumer products by 2027 or 2028.
This is not a future concern. If your production timeline for Spring 2027 starts in Q4 2026, you need compliant finishing chemistry locked in now.
Textile businesses, and other businesses which rely on intentionally added PFAS, should carry out an assessment of their products and supply chain. They are advised to consider the commercial and technical viability of moving away from PFAS as part of their long-term compliance strategies.
France moved first
France recently passed a law under which the manufacture, import and sale of products containing PFAS above a residual value will be prohibited for cosmetics, consumer clothing and ski waxes. By 2030, the ban will extend to all textiles, other than those necessary for essential uses.
The first phase of this ban took effect on 1 January 2026. Products manufactured prior to 1 January 2026 can be sold until 1 January 2027.
If you sell into the EU, your basics line is already regulated.
How does this affect founders sourcing through Dubai?
Dubai sits at a unique crossroads. The UAE is the third-largest importer of textile and apparel goods in the Gulf region. Most garments entering the region arrive through Jebel Ali Port, which handles a broad mix of containerized cargo including textiles, consumer goods, and general cargo.
For a founder building a premium basics brand out of Dubai, the logistics advantage is real: fast access to Asian mills, proximity to MENA and European markets, and a free-zone structure that simplifies re-export. Case study: a Dubai-based founder reformulates
Imagine a founder named Amir. He runs a direct-to-consumer basics brand out of Business Bay. His hero product is a 280 GSM garment-dyed tee, finished in Turkey, shipped FOB through Jebel Ali.
Amir's Turkish dye house has used the same softener for years. The tech pack lists "silicone softener," but no one has tested the finished garment for total organic fluorine. When Amir requests third-party TOF testing, the results come back at 180 ppm.
That passes California's current 100 ppm cap. But it fails France's 2026 threshold and will fail California's 2027 tightening to 50 ppm.
Amir's options:
- Request the full finishing recipe from the dye house
- Identify which step introduces fluorine (likely the softener or cross-linker)
- Spec a PFAS-free alternative, such as a silicone emulsion or plant-derived fatty acid softener
- Re-test finished goods to confirm compliance

What about bio-based alternatives for casual apparel?
The industry is moving toward bio-based nylon and bio-based elastane. Recycled polyester (rPET), bio-based nylon, and biodegradable elastane alternatives are moving from niche to mainstream.
Bio-based Spandex derived from renewable biomass (like industrial corn or seaweed) is now mainstream. These stretch fabrics offer the same 4-way recovery as traditional Lycra.
For heavyweight basics, bio-based elastane matters less than for activewear. Most premium tees use 100% cotton or cotton-linen blends. But if your line includes joggers, hoodies, or anything with stretch, bio-based elastane is now a viable spec.

- Antimicrobial treatments
- PFAS-based stain guards
The only way to know what is on the fabric is to:
- Request the full finishing recipe from your mill or dye house
- Specify finishing chemistry in your tech pack
- Test finished goods via third-party lab (TOF, targeted PFAS panel, or both)
What to spec in your tech pack
- Softeners: Silicone-based or plant-derived fatty acid. No fluorinated polymers.
- Cross-linkers: Bio-based blocking group or non-fluorinated resin.
- Antimicrobials: None, or specify silver-free, PFAS-free options.
- Stain resistance: None, or specify wax-based DWR (not fluorocarbon).

What certifications actually help?
OEKO-TEX 100 tests for harmful substances, but its PFAS screening has historically focused on legacy compounds like PFOA and PFOS. Even though products are OEKO-TEX 100 Certified, which means they have been tested for over 1,000 harmful substances, they may still contain materials with fluorinated compounds.
For PFAS specifically, look for:
- Bluesign Approved chemistry: The textile industry is rapidly investing in sustainable chemistry, and new solutions are constantly being introduced.
