Manufacturing Partner for Barcelona Apparel Brands

Barcelona has always drawn founders who think visually. The city's Mediterranean light, its architecture, its balance of tradition and experimentation. All of this shapes the brands emerging from neighbourhoods like El Born, Gràcia and Poblenou. For apparel companies here, the challenge is translating that creative energy into physical product at a price and scale that works.

Why brands in Barcelona choose to source through Ohzehn

Barcelona's independent fashion scene has matured quickly. The Barcelona fashion scene in 2026 is where Scandinavian fashion was ten years ago: a well-kept secret with strong fundamentals, ready to scale. Barcelona fashion is built for real life, not for runway moments. Most Barcelona independents sit in the €60–200 range, above fast fashion and well below luxury.

This positioning requires manufacturing that can deliver quality materials and considered construction without luxury-tier minimums. Ohzehn operates from Fuzhou, Fujian Province, the performance-apparel heartland of China. Our mill in Fuzhou holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (Class I) and completed Higg FEM verification for the 2025 cycle (Cascale, formerly SAC). The in-house lab means fabric testing happens on site rather than creating delays with third-party labs.

Co-founder JJ Chen, Chief Operations Officer, leads manufacturing operations across Ohzehn's Fuzhou facilities.

The Barcelona-to-China lane: ports and transit times

The Port of Barcelona operates two major international container terminals, APM Terminals and Hutchison Ports BEST, plus the multipurpose Bergé Terminal. The specialised terminals of the Port of Barcelona moved 3.52 million TEUs in 2022. Traffic with the Far East and Japan accounts for more than a third of the total containers.

Barcelona's hinterland accounts for 80% of the port's total cargo volume. A large variety of industries are located in the hinterland, including automotive, textile, chemical and pharmaceuticals. The textile sector's presence means customs agents and freight forwarders in Barcelona handle apparel shipments routinely.

Ocean freight

Ocean freight to Barcelona Port and Valencia Port ranges 25–31 days, with Hormuz-related Cape rerouting still adding delays on some services. From Fuzhou or Shenzhen, direct services via the Suez Canal typically land at the shorter end of that window. It may take about 26 days from Shenzhen to Barcelona. For LCL (less than container load) shipments, add 7–10 days for consolidation and deconsolidation.

Rail freight

Rail transit times remain consistent at 13–18 days. The Yiwu-Madrid Railway Line holds the record as the world's longest freight train route, stretching approximately 13,000 kilometres. Rail offers a middle ground between ocean and air: faster than sea freight, more economical than air for mid-weight shipments.

Air freight

Air freight is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to send goods from China to Spain. This method is much faster than sea freight, and your goods are delivered within 3 to 10 days. Major cargo airports in Spain are Barcelona-El Prat Airport, Madrid Airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, Lanzarote Airport and Gran Canaria Airport. Air makes sense for samples, urgent restocks or high-value items where speed justifies cost.

What we make for Barcelona brands

Barcelona's brand scene clusters around several distinct categories. Our production covers six:

Activewear

Fuzhou built its reputation on performance fabrics. Compression leggings, moisture-wicking tops, seamless construction. Barcelona's fitness culture and outdoor lifestyle make this category a natural fit for local brands building athleisure lines.

Intimates

Ohzehn produces across the intimates category, including wire-free bras, molded cups, and coordinated sets, backed by in-house lab testing on every batch.

Casual essentials

"The Barcelona aesthetic isn't loud. It's a well-cut trouser, a textured blouse, a jacket that fits like it was made for you." Basic tees, comfortable pants, pieces meant for daily wear. Mediterranean-weight fabrics that work in Barcelona's climate.

Yoga and studio wear

High-stretch fabrics, four-way flexibility, flatlock seaming. Barcelona's wellness scene supports dedicated yoga and pilates brands looking for technical construction without premium minimums.

Swimwear

Barcelona's beach culture and tourism industry create consistent demand for swimwear brands. Local labels like allSisters make sustainable swimwear with surf aesthetics and responsible manufacturing. We produce bikinis, one-pieces and cover-ups with quick-dry fabrics and chlorine-resistant treatments.

Sustainable and bio-based fabrics

Barcelona is a city full of creativity, and that extends to its fashion scene. Beyond the big-name stores and fast-changing trends, a growing number of local brands are rethinking the way clothes and accessories are made. From handcrafted beachwear to carefully designed bags, these Barcelona-based labels are proving that style and responsibility can go hand in hand.

We offer 99.5% plastic-free fabric options and organic cotton programmes. Thinking MU, founded by Pepe Barguño in 2007, uses certified organic cotton and hemp, has the TRASH line made from textile scraps and waste, and sells in approximately 30 countries. Over 80% of their sales are outside Spain. Barcelona brands building for export need certifications that European and American retailers recognise.

Compliance and tariffs for Spain brands

EU customs duties

Spain is party to the European Union's Common Customs Tariff, therefore preferential rates apply to imports from countries which the EU has signed agreements with. Duties range from 0–17%, with the general tariff averaging 4.2%. However, foodstuffs, textiles and clothing still experience some protection measures including quotas and higher tariffs.

For China-origin goods, with no FTA in play, the rate that applies is the EU Common Customs Tariff third-country rate. Rates start at 0% for many raw materials and intermediate goods and climb to 12% or higher for finished products in textiles, ceramics, leather goods and similar categories.

Expect 12% duty on most woven fabrics from China. Finished bed, bath and table linen at 6.3–12%. No current anti-dumping measures active. Apparel duties vary by HS code, fibre content and construction. Your freight forwarder or customs broker can provide exact rates for your specific product categories.

VAT

IVA at 21% applies to most imports, with reduced rates of 10% on food and 4% on basic necessities like bread and medicine. Import VAT is recoverable through your regular VAT returns, so it represents a cash flow consideration rather than a permanent cost.

Clearance process

Goods enter via Spanish port or airport. DUA (Documento Único Administrativo) filed electronically. EU duty plus 21% IVA calculated. Payment and release. Typical clearance runs 1–3 days.

Certifications that matter

For Barcelona brands selling within the EU and exporting to the US or UK, OEKO-TEX 100 certification demonstrates chemical safety. Our mill in Fuzhou holds that certification and completed Higg FEM verification for the 2025 cycle (Cascale, formerly SAC).

How time zones actually work

Barcelona operates on Central European Time: UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 during summer. Fuzhou runs on China Standard Time: UTC+8 year-round. That puts the two cities seven hours apart in winter, six hours apart in summer.

In practice: a Barcelona brand sending an email at 9:00 AM reaches Fuzhou at 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM, depending on season. Afternoon emails from Barcelona arrive in China's evening. Morning calls from Barcelona can catch the end of the China workday.

Kelvin Liu, our US-raised bilingual lead, lives in China and works flexibly across all time zones. That means Barcelona brands get real-time communication during their working hours, not a 24-hour delay waiting for China to wake up. Quote turnaround runs 72 hours from complete specification submission.

Categories of brands in Barcelona we are a fit for

There are 120 Fashion Tech startups in Barcelona, which include Stradivarius, Tropicfeel, 21 Buttons, Hawkers and FABBRIC. Out of these, 36 startups are funded, with 6 having secured Series A+ funding.

Pre-revenue and early-stage founders

Barcelona's accelerator scene supports fashion entrepreneurs. Barcelona Fashion Forward is a programme to boost emerging fashion designers and companies, supporting them in optimising processes and methods by incorporating methodologies to make them more professional. Founders coming out of these programmes need a manufacturing partner who can handle smaller initial orders without demanding enterprise-scale minimums.

Scaling DTC brands

Expect more international expansion, physical retail in key European cities, and stronger wholesale partnerships. LAAGAM opened its first international store in Amsterdam, a natural fit for a city that already dresses this way. More European openings are planned throughout 2026. Brands moving from proof-of-concept to multi-market expansion need production that can scale without quality degradation.

Sustainable-first labels

Colmillo de Morsa is a Catalan fashion brand. Their philosophy is to craft by hand rather than by machine, not unlike the Nordic traditions that inspire their designs. The designers focus on tiny details that they use to embellish their clothing. They are great adepts of sustainable fashion, working only with European suppliers, with natural fabrics that do not use toxic dyes. For brands whose identity centres on material sourcing and environmental credentials, we provide the certifications and traceability documentation to back up marketing claims.

Wholesale suppliers to European retail

Brands selling through multi-brand boutiques, department stores or online marketplaces need consistent sizing, professional labelling and delivery reliability. Our experience producing for major American retailers translates directly to European wholesale requirements.

The case for going direct

Many Barcelona brands start with trading companies, sourcing agents or middlemen who aggregate orders across multiple factories. This approach makes sense when you need hand-holding and have no idea where to begin. It stops making sense when you realize the margin compression and communication delays are costing you more than the convenience is worth.

Going direct to a vertically integrated factory means your technical questions get answered by people who actually touch the fabric, not by someone relaying messages. It means changes to specifications happen in hours, not days. It means your cost structure reflects actual production costs, not layers of intermediary margin.

Ohzehn runs its own production floor, lab and sourcing. No subcontracting to unknown facilities. No quality surprises when goods arrive in Barcelona.

The brands that thrive here share something: a clear vision of what they want to make and enough patience to build the relationship that delivers it. Barcelona has always rewarded that combination of creativity and persistence.
